The Evolutionary Status of M3 Rr Lyrae Variables: Breakdown of the Canonical Framework?

چکیده

In order to test the prevailing paradigm of horizontal-branch (HB) stellar evolution, we use the large databases of measured RR Lyrae parameters for the globular cluster M3 (NGC 5272) recently provided by Bakos et al. and Corwin & Carney. We compare the observed distribution of fundamentalized periods against the predictions of synthetic HBs. The observed distribution shows a sharp peak at Pf ≈ 0.55 d, which is primarily due to the RRab variables, whereas the model predictions instead indicate that the distribution should be more uniform in Pf, with a buildup of variables with shorter periods (Pf < 0.5 d). Detailed statistical tests show, for the first time, that the observed and predicted distributions are incompatible with one another at a high significance level. Either this indicates that canonical HB models are inappropriate, or that M3 is a pathological case that cannot be considered representative of the Oosterhoff type I (OoI) class. In this sense, we show that the OoI cluster with the next largest number of RR Lyrae variables, M5 (NGC 5904), presents a similar, though less dramatic, challenge to the models. We show that the sharp peak in the M3 period distribution receives a significant contribution from the Blazhko variables in the cluster. We also show that M15 (NGC 7078) and M68 (NGC 4590) show similar peaks in their Pf distributions, which in spite of being located at a similar Pf value as M3’s, can however be primarily ascribed to the RRc variables. Again similar to M3, a demise of RRc variables towards the blue edge of the instability strip is also present in these two globulars. This is again in sharp contrast with the evolutionary scenario, which also foresees a strong buildup of RRc variables with short periods in OoII globulars. We speculate that, in OoI systems, RRab variables may somehow get “trapped” close to the transition line between RRab and RRc pulsators as they evolve to the blue in the H-R diagram, whereas in OoII systems it is the RRc variables that may get similarly “trapped” instead, as they evolve to the red, before changing their pulsation mode to RRab. Such a scenario is supported by the available CMDs and Bailey diagrams for M3, M15, and M68. New Ccd Observations of the Rr Lyrae Variables in the Oosterhoff Type Ii Cluster M9

CCD observations have been used to study sixteen of the previously known variables in the Oosterhoo type II globular cluster M9. The properties of the RR Lyrae variables in M9 are compared with those in the Oosterhoo type I cluster M3. Methods devised by Simon, Jurcsik and Kovv acs have been used to derive physical parameters for the stars from Fourier analysis. The mean metal abundance so deri...

Lyrae variables in Galactic globular clusters

RR Lyrae variables in Galactic globular clusters V. The case of M3 pulsators. Abstract. We use our synthetic Horizontal Branch (HB) procedure to approach the debated problem concerning the adequacy of canonical HB stellar models to account for the observed peaked distribution of RR Lyrae fundamentalised periods in the globular cluster M3. We find that by assuming a suitable bimodal mass distrib...

The Rr Lyrae Period-amplitude Relation as a Clue to the Origin of the Oosterhoff Dichotomy

An examination of the period-V amplitude relation for RRab stars (fundamental mode pulsators) with ‘normal’ light curves in the Oosterhoff type I clusters M3 and M107 and in the Oosterhoff type II clusters M9 and M68 reveals that the V amplitude for a given period is not a function of metal abundance. Rather, it is a function of the Oosterhoff type. This result is confirmed by published observa...

Double-mode Rr Lyrae Variables: Pulsational Masses Revisited

Double-mode RR Lyrae variables (i.e. radial variables which are simultaneously pulsating in both fundamental and first overtone modes) appear a fundamental tool for investigating the mass of old Population II Horizontal Branch (HB) stars. The most widespread method adopted for evaluating the masses of these objects is based on the Petersen (1973) approach, which relies only on pulsational perio...

The Distance of the First Overtone RR Lyrae Variables in the MACHO LMC Database: A New Method to Correct for the Effects of Crowding

Previous studies have indicated that many of the RR Lyrae variables in the LMC have properties similar to the ones in the Galactic globular cluster M3. Assuming that the M3 RR Lyrae variables follow the same relationships among period, temperature, amplitude and Fourier phase parameter φ31 as their LMC counterparts, we have used the M3 φ31−log P relation to identify the M3-like unevolved first ...
